This is how much I cut off the front spar of the VS.  I aligned the VS by measuring side to side against the HS and made sure it was centered on the aft most bulkhead with the height as indicated on the plans.

The bend in the F-681 attach plate was about 4 degrees too much.  Called Vans and they said to beat it with a hammer.  Drilled undersized holes as per plans.

Riveted the plate to the forward spar of the VS.

I used a laser level and aligned the VS by shining the laser level down the center of the fuselage.  I set it up on a tripod on a table in front of the firewall so it would shine along the entire interior.  Made sure the front of the VS was perfectly aligned down the center.  Drilled the attach holes undersized with a 90 degree and pancake drill then final drilled with a crisp new drill bit.  Edge clearance is good and it’s dead nutz.
